Working with English letters

An English font needs more than a row of letters. Real sentences mix uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. The character grid below is a planning template, not a copy of another typeface's letterforms.

Uppercase and lowercase

English has 26 letters, but designing both cases gives you 52 basic letterforms. Keep their weight and character related without simply shrinking the capitals. Letters such as a and g can have their own construction.

Numbers and symbols

Include the digits 0–9 and marks such as the period, comma, and question mark. Try them in short sentences to check height, spacing, and visual weight. The grid below contains every space and ASCII symbol in the app's basic Latin repertoire.

The spaces between letters matter

Once the shapes are drawn, test words and sentences. Pairs such as AV may look too far apart, while rn may appear joined even when each glyph looks fine alone. Spacing turns a set of shapes into a font people can read.

Going beyond English

This grid covers a basic English starting point. Supporting languages such as French, German, or Spanish also calls for accented and additional characters like é, ñ, and ü. A font that displays English does not automatically cover every language written with Latin letters.
